From Data to Decisions: The Power of Biostatistics in Health Research

Good health research without strong statistical analysis is like a compass without direction. Biostatistics is the foundation on which evidence-based medicine is built — and it's a skill every health researcher needs.

Every randomised controlled trial, every epidemiological survey, every systematic review that informs clinical guidelines — they all depend on one thing: rigorous statistical analysis.

Yet in East Africa, biostatistics remains one of the most underdeveloped skills among health researchers. Our training needs assessments consistently identify statistical methods as the area where researchers feel least confident.

Why It Matters

Weak statistical analysis doesn't just produce bad papers — it produces bad health policy. When studies are underpowered, when confounders aren't controlled, when effect sizes are misinterpreted, the conclusions drawn can lead to interventions that don't work — or worse, cause harm.

Our Biostatistics Programme

Our four-week Biostatistics course equips participants with practical skills in:

  • Descriptive and inferential statistics
  • Regression analysis and survival analysis
  • SPSS, Stata, and R software
  • Research protocol development
  • Scientific writing and result interpretation

We use real-world health datasets throughout the course, ensuring participants can immediately apply their skills to their own research projects.
